If you've never made maille before I hope this page helps you to get started. It's easy once you get the hang of it. If you have made maille before you'll probably know all this already, but I'll try to put up a few tips and tricks as we go on. So what are you waiting for?! Get weaving!!
Thread a number of closed rings onto a wire, the number depends on the required size of the finished piece of maille.
Make a "Bug" by linking four closed rings (coloured blue) with one open ring (coloured red).
Attach the "Bug" by two of its outside rings, to the first two rings on the wire by means of an open ring (coloured blue).
Continue this with more bugs (blue, red and yellow) along the rest of the original wires on the wire with more open rings (green).
Taking the first two rows of bugs on the wire, join the blue rings with an open ring, taking care that it lies in the same direction as the others on the second row.
Continue to join all the bus together in this manner with more open rings (blue) and a section of maille should be completed. It should look like this
I found this technique to be the quickest and easiest to make European 4 in 1. The original technique must be similar to allow closed rings to be used in the construction of maille as they were. From the diagrams it is apparent how half the rings can be welded or riveted before construction.
